Civics: U.S. Political Policy Analysis Fall 2024
A few of your parents thought it would be a good idea if you could be taught to think independently, critically, and logically to evaluate arguments about political issues—and other things! Since we have a national election in November this is a particularly good time to develop those skills. This class will start with a foundations review of the proper role of government and the improper role of government, value systems and morality, and constitutional principles. We will then undertake to examine specific political hot topic issues such as inflation, border security, climate change, foreign policy with respect to war in Ukraine and Israel, trade policy, minimum wage, education (home schooling?), and so many others. Students will research the policy positions of the major political parties: Republican and Democrat, and where useful, the minor parties: Constitution, Libertarian, and Green. Students will participate in defending various policies and opinions. I’m looking forward to a lot of fun with this class!
Schedule: Classes will be held on Thursday mornings at 8:15 to 9:30 AM. Local students are invited to attend in person at Fluckiger’s home. Online enrollment is available for distance learning via Zoom. While it is more difficult to fully participate by Zoom, we will try to give equal time to those students in class participation. The course will start on Thursday September 12 and conclude on November 7, for a total of nine weeks.
Tuition: $200
